QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS FOR POTENTIAL CONTENDERS

Q: I’m a girl; will I feel out of place if I join?

A. Actually the boxing workout is becoming increasingly popular amongst women. More and more women are discovering that it's a great way to get in shape, lose weight and increase self-confidence. At present, approximately 25% of our members / class members are women.

Q: Am I to old/young to learn how to box?

A. If you're old enough to be using our website or young enough that your eyesight can cope reading it, you're ok!

Q: Do I have to make a membership commitment?

A. No. If you just want to see if boxing is for you just commit to 4 weeks by signing up for a class. If you find you like it you just continue to pay each month.

Q: Do I have to “get in the ring and spar?”

A. At Contenders Boxing Club we don't make any of our members do anything they don't want to do, that includes sparring. It is a great was to see progression of both your skills and technique and your physical fitness however, it is certainly not necessary to your workout and is 100% optional. Our coaches will push you to a level within the scope of your ability and within the boundaries of what you feel comfortable with.

Q: Is boxing safe?

A. Training for boxing is very safe however it should be noted that it does include some high level exercise which some people may find a little hard on the joints. Sparring (actual boxing) is a full contact activity and therefore runs the potential risk of injury. It is of course entirely optional and is by no means essential to your workout.

At Contenders Boxing Club sparring is always held under the safest guidelines and in a controlled environment. Our Coaches work closely with members to ensure a sparring session is a safe opportunity to improve your technique and to exercise.

Q: What equipment do I need to train at Contenders Boxing Club?

A. This depends upon the level.  Members will need to purchase hand-wraps (which can be purchased at the gym) and secondly, if members chose to get into the ring, boxing shoes are required (otherwise normal training shoes are fine).

Q: Why is boxing such a good workout?

A. The boxing workout is a complete body workout that combines aerobic and anaerobic exercise with calisthenics, this complete combination is rarely found in other sports.

- This combination of training is the best way for the human body to "find" its own natural balance and weight. Once you are in good shape your body weight, muscle tone, metabolism and energy levels will all change to be where they should be.

- Boxing is more than just a work-out; it's a change of lifestyle. The chances are, once you get into your routine you will find the environment at Contenders Boxing Club and the success of other members will encourage you into wanting some of that success yourself. You will be less likely to slip into bad habits like lack of sleep and poor diet. You will want to work harder and to live a healthier life.

- Boxing = Results.  The more you learn, the more confident you become. The better shape you see yourself in the more you will want to improve. We're sorry but you really will find it addictive!!

Q: What type of people train at Contenders Boxing Club?

A. Many people believe that a boxing club is only for pro's, many people are wrong! At Contenders Boxing Club people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds train under the same roof. We have professional fighters training along side doctors, lawyers, actors, students, construction workers, bus drivers, housewives to name a few.

Contenders Boxing Club has "white collar, blue collar, two collars and no collar" training at the club. The fact is whatever your background, whoever you are, we'll be able to provide you with a comfortable training environment where you can achieve your physical goals.

Q: Do I need to be in good shape to start training?

A. Before they start many of our new members have had no formal exercise training and most are pretty out of shape. Regardless of your fitness level we can get you started, the hardest part is getting yourself through the door for the first workout.

Once you've done that you'll be hooked. Remember, when starting any exercise program, if you haven't worked out in a while we recommend you consult your doctor first.
